Start With the Driveway’s Real Job
Before demolition or excavation, define how the driveway will be used. A two-car residential driveway carrying passenger vehicles has different needs than one supporting a heavy pickup, RV, trailer, work van, or frequent delivery traffic. Thickness, reinforcement, base depth, and transitions at the garage and sidewalk should match the expected load.
Access is part of the plan too. A concrete truck needs a clear route, and a pump may be needed when the placement area is behind a house, below street level, or difficult to reach. The crew also needs room for forms, wheelbarrows, finishing tools, saws, and safe movement during the pour.

Protect the Finished Elevations
The driveway should slope away from the house and garage where possible. A common target is roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch of fall per foot, but drainage design depends on the site. The goal is controlled water movement, not a steep slab that feels awkward to park on.
Pay close attention to the garage door, front walk, street, and side-yard gates. Once concrete is poured, correcting a bad elevation usually means cutting, grinding, adding drainage, or starting over. Establish grades with string lines, a laser level, or other reliable layout methods before base material arrives.
Build and Compact a Stable Base
Concrete is strong in compression, but it is not a bridge over poor soil. A well-graded aggregate base helps support the slab, improves drainage, and gives the crew a consistent surface for placement. It also makes it easier to hold proper elevations.
Spread base material in manageable lifts and compact each lift thoroughly. Dumping several inches of base in one layer and running a plate compactor over the top does not fully compact the material below. If the base moves under foot or leaves deep impressions from equipment, it needs more attention before concrete day.
Some sites need more than standard base preparation. Areas with expansive clay, fill soil, drainage problems, tree roots, or prior settlement may need additional excavation, geotextile fabric, engineered base, or a recommendation from a soils professional. Choose Thickness and Reinforcement for the Load
For many residential driveways, 4 inches of concrete is the starting point. Heavier vehicles, RV parking, trash-truck access, and other higher-load areas may justify 5 inches or more. The apron, turnaround, and sections near a garage often see concentrated loads and deserve separate consideration.
Reinforcement helps manage cracking, but it does not replace proper thickness or base compaction. Wire mesh, rebar, and fiber reinforcement each have a place depending on the design. If steel reinforcement is used, it must be supported in the slab, not left on the ground where it provides little benefit.
A thicker driveway is not automatically better if the drainage, base, and joint plan are wrong. On the other hand, saving a small amount on thickness can be a poor trade when the driveway will regularly carry a heavy vehicle. Match the installation to the property rather than using a one-size-fits-all spec.
Forming and Joint Layout Are Not Cosmetic Details
Forms establish the driveway’s edges, slope, and thickness. They need to be straight, properly staked, and secure enough to stay in place during placement and finishing. Curves should be smooth and intentional, not shaped by whatever the form material happens to do.

Concrete Placement Is a Fast, Coordinated Operation
Concrete should be placed close to its final location, spread evenly, and consolidated without excessive handling. Adding water at the jobsite may make finishing easier, but too much water weakens the surface and increases shrinkage. If workability needs adjustment, it should be handled carefully and according to the mix design.

Keep traffic off the driveway until it has gained adequate strength. After curing, seal joints when appropriate and keep them free of soil and vegetation. Clean oil spills promptly, manage irrigation so it does not wash out edges, and avoid aggressive deicing chemicals if freezing conditions are expected.
